The First Trimester Struggle

Being pregnant can be one of the most joyous times in your life! You and your partner get excited for baby and everyone around you is happy for you! It’s all happy and good right!? Ummmm…..not necessarily.

One of the less joyous parts of pregnancy are the weird symptoms and body and hormonal changes that we experience.
Here are some of the changes I experienced and the remedies I used to overcome or alleviate them.

  • Excessive tiredness and fatigue. I remember feeling as if I would collapse because of how tired I was. I tried to build up some stamina by trying my best to remain active. My husband and I would go for walks in the mornings or evenings (getting some fresh air can make s world of difference, trust me). I also made sure that I ate healthy-er. I ate more fruits and vegetables and other high power foods. I also stayed away from anything too heavy or oily. Most importantly, I listened to my body and took breaks when I needed to.
  • Nausea and vomiting aka morning sickness. I had severe morning sickness for 3-4 weeks. During this time, ginger was my best friend. I kept ginger candies with me, drank ginger flavored tea and at times would even chew or suck on raw ginger. The ginger did not stop my morning sickness it made me feel a lot better throughout the day.
  • Acne. I experienced acne during my first trimester but it was short lived. Prenatal vitamins seemed to have done the trick. (P.S. you can take these vitamins even if you are not pregnant.
  • Spitting. I had so much saliva that I needed to spit every minute. LITERALLY! It felt disgusting and was driving me crazy. To cope with this, I chewed on sugar free gum. I also had to brush my teeth several times throughout the day because I would find that the spit would bring on nausea.

What symptoms did you have and remedies did you use to manage them?
